Resetting Your Making Tax Digital (MTD) Token

If your Making Tax Digital (MTD) token becomes invalid, expires, or needs to be refreshed, you can now reset it directly within Navigator without needing to contact the Helpdesk.

This is useful if Navigator is unable to communicate with HMRC when viewing or submitting VAT information.

When should I reset the MTD token?

You may need to reset the token if:

• Navigator reports that the HMRC token is invalid.
• Your HMRC authorisation has expired or is no longer being accepted.
• You are unable to retrieve VAT obligations or other HMRC information.
• A VAT submission cannot proceed because the existing MTD authorisation needs to be refreshed.
• You have been advised that the HMRC connection needs to be re-authorised.

How to reset the token

1. Open VAT Return and Making Tax Digital.
2. Go look at your current return screen.
3. Select Reset Token at the bottom of the screen.
4. Follow the HMRC authorisation process when prompted.
5. Sign in using the appropriate Government Gateway / HMRC credentials and grant Navigator permission to access the Making Tax Digital service.
6. Once authorisation has completed, return to Navigator and continue with your VAT processing.

No Helpdesk request required

Previously, an invalid or problematic MTD token may have required assistance from the Helpdesk.

The Reset Token option allows you to refresh the HMRC connection yourself, meaning most token-related issues can be resolved immediately without having to raise a support ticket.

Important: Resetting the token does not alter the figures on your VAT return. It simply renews the authorisation Navigator uses to communicate securely with HMRC.
