Vehicle Write Down - Getting An Error When Posting (Write Down Is Greater Than SIV)

Modified on Fri, 7 Feb at 8:58 AM

A write-down cannot exceed the value of the vehicle (SIV - Stand-in-Value) because doing so would create a negative asset value, which is not financially or logically feasible. Here’s why:

1. Preventing a Negative Asset Value

  • The SIV (Stand-in-Value) represents the vehicle’s recorded cost in the dealership’s accounts.
  • If a write-down were to exceed this value, it would imply that the vehicle has a negative worth, which is impossible because assets cannot have negative intrinsic value.

2. Maintaining Accurate Financial Records

  • A vehicle’s book value must always reflect a realistic and justifiable financial position.
  • Overwriting its value beyond its SIV would cause inaccurate financial reporting, affecting profit calculations and overall financial statements.

3. Compliance with Accounting Standards

  • Standard accounting principles dictate that businesses must report asset values accurately.
  • Writing down a vehicle beyond its SIV would violate these principles, potentially leading to compliance issues during audits.

4. Impact on Profit and Loss Reporting

  • A write-down is recognised as a financial loss on the dealership’s accounts.
  • If the write-down exceeds the vehicle’s value, it would overstate losses, distorting financial performance metrics and misrepresenting the business’s profitability.

5. Logical Constraints in Resale or Disposal

  • Even if a vehicle is significantly devalued, it always retains some residual value (e.g., scrap value, parts resale).
  • Writing it down below zero would suggest it has no value at all, which is unrealistic in most cases.

How to Check the Vehicle’s SIV

To ensure a write-down does not exceed the vehicle's value:

  • Go to the Purchase Status tab.
  • Review the Cost Analysis section to check the SIV.
  • The write-down must not surpass this figure.
