Overview

This guide outlines the necessary hardware and software requirements for implementing the Navigator system. It covers the specifications needed for PCs, touch screen setups, printers, retail point of sale tills, networking, and software requirements.


1. PC Specifications

Minimum PC Requirements

To run Navigator effectively on a PC, the following minimum specifications are recommended:

  • Processor: Dual Core
  • Operating System: Windows 10 Professional (64-bit edition)
  • Memory: 4GB RAM
  • Storage: 10GB disk space
  • Monitor: Widescreen Monitor
  • Software: Microsoft Office 2016 (optional, but required for Management Accounts DOC production and letter generation using Word)

Note: Navigator is compatible with Microsoft Remote Desktop clients, provided users have the necessary privileges to install software updates.

Important Considerations

  • Updates: Continuous updates to Navigator may increase the demands on your PC. Ensure that the PC specifications are reviewed periodically.
  • Regional Settings: Check that the PC’s regional settings are configured correctly to avoid any date-related issues.

2. Touch Screen PC Specifications

For workshops using the Navigator system with a Technicians Clock, a touch screen PC is required. There are a few setup options available:

Setup Options:

  1. Attach a Touch Screen Monitor to an Existing PC:

    • Connect a DMS-provided or externally purchased touch screen monitor to a compatible PC.
    • The monitor should connect via VGA or HDMI output.
    • This is the most cost-effective option, using an existing PC base unit.
  2. Supply a Complete New PC:

    • All-in-One PCs: These PCs combine the computer and monitor into one unit. Be aware that a fault in either the monitor or the PC may require complete replacement.
    • Separate PC Base Unit: A complete PC setup with a separate base unit.
    • Micro PC Mounted to Monitor: A micro PC can be mounted to the back of a touch screen monitor for a compact solution.

3. Printer Specifications

Navigator supports inkjet and laser printers that can print directly from the local PC.

Important Notes:

  • Dot Matrix Printers: Not supported.
  • Volume Printing: Laser printers are recommended for high-volume printing.
  • GDI Printers: Low-end laser printers (like those from Samsung, Dell, and Xerox) may not work well with Navigator.
  • Duplex Printing: A duplex printer is required for double-sided printing.
  • Multiple Media Types: For different paper/card types or colors, a dual-bin printer may be necessary.

4. Retail Point of Sale Tills

Navigator can be used with retail point of sale systems, which typically include a PC, optional touch screen monitor, receipt printer, cash drawer, barcode scanner, and barcode printer.

Recommended Components:

  • Touch Screen Monitor: Any monitor with Windows drivers will work, with ELO and IIyama being recommended brands.
  • Receipt Printer: The Bixolon SRP-275iiii with USB connection is suitable.
  • Cash Drawer: Compatible with the aux capability of the Bixolon printer (e.g., "Star" cash drawers).
  • Barcode Scanner:
    • Handheld: Honeywell 1200G is recommended for single-line and omni-scanning.
    • Hands-Free: Honeywell "Orbit" scanners work well.
  • Barcode Printer: Samsung SRP770 and Zebra TLP 2844 are supported, requiring a specific label size (45mm x 35mm single row).

5. Network Requirements

On-Site Solutions:

  • The PC must be able to access the on-site server across the local network.

Hosted Solutions:

  • The PC requires free, unrestricted access through firewalls and routers to the internet using port 443 (https/ssl).

6. Software Requirements

  • Microsoft Office 2016: Required for Marketing and Accounting systems (Management Accounts).
  • Anti-virus Software & Firewall: Ensure Navigator can be loaded and receive updates. Contact DMS for advice if necessary.
