Adding Program Exceptions in Antivirus Programs

Please note that the specific folder below will need to be added as an exception for Navigator. Please do not select the folder with the specific version number the exceptions need to be added as below.


C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Navigator

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Navigator\CefSharp.BrowserSubprocess.exe

This is particularly useful for legitimate programs that may be mistakenly identified as threats. While the process may vary slightly between antivirus programs, the general steps remain similar.

Below is a step-by-step guide to adding exceptions for common antivirus programs:


1. Windows Defender (Microsoft Defender)

Windows Defender is the built-in antivirus solution for Windows systems. To add an exception:

  1. Open Windows Security:

    • Press the Windows key and type "Windows Security," then select the app.
  2. Navigate to Virus & Threat Protection:

    • In the left-hand menu, select Virus & Threat Protection.
  3. Manage Settings:

    • Scroll down and click on Manage Settings under the Virus & Threat Protection Settings section.
  4. Add or Remove Exclusions:

    • Scroll down to the Exclusions section and click Add or Remove Exclusions.
  5. Add an Exclusion:

    • Click Add an Exclusion and choose from File, Folder, File Type, or Process depending on what you want to exclude.
    • Navigate to the location of the program or file and select it.

2. McAfee Antivirus

To add exceptions in McAfee antivirus:

  1. Open McAfee:

    • Launch the McAfee interface from the system tray or start menu.
  2. Go to Real-Time Scanning:

    • On the main dashboard, click on the Settings gear icon, then choose Real-Time Scanning.
  3. Exclude a File:

    • Scroll down to the Exclusions section and click Add File or Add Folder.
  4. Choose the File or Folder:

    • Select the file or folder you want to exclude from scanning, and confirm the changes.
  5. Save Settings:

    • After adding the exclusion, save your changes and close the window.

3. Norton Antivirus

To add exceptions in Norton antivirus:

  1. Open Norton:

    • Launch the Norton antivirus program.
  2. Go to Settings:

    • Click on Settings in the Norton dashboard.
  3. Access Antivirus Settings:

    • In the settings window, click on Antivirus under the Detailed Settings section.
  4. Add Exclusion:

    • Select the Scans and Risks tab.
    • Scroll down to the Exclusions/Low Risks section and click on Configure next to Items to Exclude from Scans or Items to Exclude from Auto-Protect and SONAR.
  5. Add File, Folder, or Extension:

    • Click Add and browse to select the file, folder, or process you want to exclude.
  6. Save Settings:

    • Click Apply to save your exclusions.

4. AVG/Avast Antivirus

The steps to add exceptions are similar in AVG and Avast antivirus, as they share the same interface:

  1. Open AVG/Avast:

    • Launch the antivirus program from the system tray or start menu.
  2. Go to Settings:

    • Click on the Menu (three lines) in the top right corner, then select Settings.
  3. Find Exceptions:

    • In the settings window, go to General > Exceptions.

5. Kaspersky Antivirus

To add an exception in Kaspersky:

  2. Go to Settings:

    • Click on the Settings gear icon in the bottom left corner.
  3. Access Additional Settings:

    • Navigate to Protection in the left panel, then click Manage Exclusions.
  4. Add an Exclusion:

    • Click Add to select a file, folder, or application to exclude from scanning.
  5. Specify Exception:

    • Specify the type of exclusion (files, folders, or processes) and confirm the path.
  6. Save Changes:

    • Save your settings and close the window.

6. Bitdefender Antivirus

To add exceptions in Bitdefender:

  1. Open Bitdefender:

    • Open the Bitdefender application from the system tray or start menu.
  2. Go to Protection Settings:

    • In the left menu, click on Protection.
  3. Manage Exceptions:

    • Under the Antivirus tab, click on Settings, then scroll down to Exclusions.
  4. Add Exclusion:

    • Click on Add an Exclusion, and choose whether you want to exclude a file, folder, or an entire application.
    • Specify the location of the item you want to exclude.
  5. Choose Exclusion Type:

    • You can choose to exclude the item from On-Access Scanning or On-Demand Scanning, or both.
  6. Save:

    • Click Save to apply the exclusion.


7. Sophos Antivirus

To add exceptions in Sophos:

  1. Open Sophos Endpoint Security:

    • Launch the Sophos Endpoint Security interface from the system tray or start menu.
  2. Go to Settings:

    • In the main dashboard, click Settings.
  3. Access the Exclusions Section:

    • In the settings window, find and select Global Settings.
    • Click on Exceptions or Add Exclusion depending on the version you are using.
  4. Add an Exception:

    • Click Add Exception, then select either File, Folder, Website, or Process based on the item you want to exclude.
  5. Choose the File/Folder/Website/Process:

    • Browse to locate the specific file, folder, or enter the website URL or process name to exclude.
  6. Save the Exclusion:

    • Confirm your selection and save the changes.


8. ESET AntiVirus


Step 1: Open ESET Antivirus

  • Launch ESET by double-clicking the ESET icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner of your screen).
  • Alternatively, you can search for "ESET" in the Start Menu and open it from there.

Step 2: Access Advanced Settings

  • In the main ESET window, click on the "Setup" tab located in the left-side menu.
  • Next, click on "Computer Protection" under the Setup section.
  • Scroll down and look for the "Advanced setup" link at the bottom of the window and click on it. (Alternatively, press F5 to open Advanced Settings directly).

Step 3: Navigate to Exclusions

  • In the Advanced Setup window, expand the section labelled "Detection Engine" (or "Antivirus" in some versions).
  • Next, click on "Exclusions" from the options under the Detection Engine section.

Step 4: Add the Exception for Navigator

  • In the Exclusions window, click on the "Add" button to open the file browser.
  • Now, navigate to the folder where Navigator.exe is located. This is in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\DmsNavigator 
  • Select the DmsNavigator folder and click OK.

Step 5: Apply and Save Changes

  • Once you’ve added the Navigator folder to the exclusions list, click OK to save the changes.
  • Close the Advanced Setup window.

Step 6: Verify the Exception

  • To ensure the exception is in place, go back to the Exclusions section under Advanced Setup and confirm that the folder appears in the list of excluded files.

Step 7: Restart ESET (Optional)

  • In some cases, ESET might need to restart to apply the new settings. You can restart your computer or simply exit and reopen ESET.

General Tips for Adding Exceptions

  • Only add trusted files or programs. Excluding malicious files could compromise your computer’s security.
  • Always keep your antivirus software updated to ensure it accurately detects potential threats.
  • Use exclusions sparingly. Too many exclusions can reduce the overall effectiveness of your antivirus.
