How to Assign an Account Type to a Nominal Code

This guide explains the process of assigning an account type to a nominal code in Navigator. Assigning the correct account type ensures that transactions are categorised accurately based on their purpose and functionality. It also ensure you are abe to report on all the transaction data posted to that nominal code.


Steps to Assign an Account Type

Step 1: Access the Accounts Module

  1. Ensure you have the necessary permissions to access the Accounts Module.
  2. Navigate to Accounts > Nominal Ledger.

Step 2: Access Utilities and Setup

  1. In the Nominal Ledger toolbar, select the Utilities Tab.
  2. Click on the Setup button to access configuration options.

Step 3: Locate the Nominal Code

  1. In the Setup window, select the Nominal Code tab.
  2. Use one of the following methods to locate the nominal code you want to update:
    • Scroll through the list manually.
    • Use the Filter Box to search for the nominal code or its description.
  3. Once found, double-click the nominal code to open its setup configuration.

Step 4: Assign the Account Type

  1. In the setup window for the selected nominal code:
    • Tick the desired account type to assign it to the nominal code.
    • For example, in the nominal code 1.32.30.88, the bolded section (30) represents the account type.
  2. Review your selection to ensure accuracy.

Step 5: Save the Changes

  1. Once satisfied with the configuration, click the Update button to save the changes.
  2. The nominal code is now linked to the selected account type.

Example

  • Nominal Code: 1.32.30.88
  • Account Type to Assign: 30 (e.g., a specific type like "Cost of Sale").
  • After selecting the account type and clicking Update, the code will now be categorised appropriately.

  • Permissions: Ensure you have the necessary access rights to modify nominal codes.
  • Review Carefully: Double-check the selected account type to avoid misclassification of transactions.
  • Nominal Code Structure: Understanding the structure of the nominal code (e.g., branch, department, type) helps in making the correct assignments.
