When running nominal or transaction reports in Navigator, you may want to view information across several branches or departments without having to select each one individually.
For supported reports, Navigator allows you to use an asterisk (*) as a wildcard within the nominal code.
This allows you to include multiple branches or departments in a single report, making it easier to review accounting balances and investigate transactions across your company.
This guide explains how wildcards work and how to use them when running nominal reports.
What is a wildcard?
A wildcard is a character used in place of a specific value within a search or report filter.
In Navigator, the asterisk (*) can be used in supported nominal reports to represent all values within a particular part of the nominal code.
For example, a nominal code may contain the following elements:
Branch.Department.Nominal Code
By replacing the branch or department with an asterisk, you can include all applicable values within that position.
How do wildcards work?
The following examples demonstrate how wildcard filtering can be used.
| Nominal code | What it includes |
|---|---|
*.*.70.97 | Nominal 70.97 across all branches and departments within the selected company. |
1.*.70.97 | Nominal 70.97 across all departments within Branch 1. |
*.2.70.97 | Nominal 70.97 for Department 2 across all branches. |
1.2.70.97 | Nominal 70.97 for Branch 1, Department 2 only. |
These examples use illustrative branch and department numbers.
Important: Wildcards apply within the company you are currently working in. They do not combine financial information from different companies.
How to run a nominal report using wildcards
Open the relevant nominal or transaction report in Navigator.
Locate the Nominal Code field.
Enter the nominal code using an asterisk in place of the branch or department you wish to include.
Select any additional reporting criteria, such as the reporting date or period.
Run the report.
Review the results to confirm that the expected branches or departments have been included.
For example, entering *.*.70.97 in a supported report allows you to review nominal 70.97 across all branches and departments within the selected company.
This avoids the need to run the report separately for each branch or department.
Using wildcards with Schedule Nominal
The Schedule Nominal report can be particularly useful when investigating balances across multiple branches or departments.
For example, you may want to identify which vehicles are contributing to a Sales Suspense balance.
To do this:
Navigate to Nominal Ledger > Reports > Schedule Nominal.
Enter
*.*.70.97as the nominal code, where this is the applicable Sales Suspense code.Set Schedule By to Stock Number.
Select the relevant reporting date.
Run the report.
The report allows you to analyse the selected nominal balance by vehicle stock number, helping identify which vehicles are contributing to the outstanding amount.
This is particularly useful when investigating vehicle accounting balances such as Sales Suspense.
Can I use wildcards to report across different companies?
No. Using a wildcard does not combine nominal information from separate accounting companies.
If your dealership operates multiple companies within Navigator, the wildcard applies to the branches and departments associated with the company you are currently working within.
To review financial information for another company, you will need to select the appropriate company and run the report again.
This is an important distinction when comparing financial information across a dealership group.
Can I use wildcards in every Navigator report?
Not necessarily.
Wildcard support depends on the report and the fields available.
Some nominal and transaction reports support wildcard filtering, while other reports may require you to select specific branches, departments or nominal codes.
If a wildcard does not produce the expected results, check the report's available filtering options or contact the Navigator Helpdesk for assistance.
Summary
Using wildcards in supported Navigator reports allows you to retrieve nominal information across multiple branches or departments without selecting each one individually.
The asterisk (*) represents all values within the relevant position of the nominal code.
For example:
*.*.70.97includes all branches and departments for nominal 70.97.1.*.70.97includes all departments within Branch 1.*.2.70.97includes Department 2 across all branches.
Remember: Wildcards only apply within the currently selected company and are not supported by every report.
Using these filters alongside reports such as Schedule Nominal can make investigating accounting balances quicker and easier.
